UK mileage rates

What you can claim per mile for business driving in the United Kingdom, set by HMRC under the Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP).

The rates in force now

In force from 1 September 2026.

Business mileage rates for the United Kingdom
VehicleRate
Car 55p a mile for the first 10,000 miles · 25p a mile after that
Van 55p a mile for the first 10,000 miles · 25p a mile after that
Motorcycle 24p a mile
Bicycle 20p a mile

Bands reset each tax year, which starts on 6 April, so the higher band is available again from then. Carrying a colleague on the same business journey adds 5p a mile.

Company car fuel rates

Different question, different rate. The table above is for using your own vehicle. These are for fuel when you drive a company car, where the car is not yours to claim for — only the fuel you paid for.

Reviewed quarterly by HMRC, so these move more often than the rates above.

What that adds up to

10,000 business miles in a year comes to £5,500.00 (10,000 mi at 55p a mile).

Keeping the record

Whatever the rate, the claim only stands up if the journeys behind it do. That means the date, where you went, how far, and why it was business. Reclaim records each trip as you drive, prices it at the rate above, and turns the lot into a claim you can send.

Rates change when HMRC changes them. Reclaim picks new rates up without waiting for an app update, and old trips keep the rate that applied on the day they happened.
